How do I reconize love scamming?
There are various ways in which you can check whether you are dealing with love scammers.
Fake photos:
These are often entire photo series in which poses and clothing are similar. Scam women like to present themselves revealingly. The photos are often stolen or were taken specifically for love scamming.
Many compliments and strokes of fate:
➔ Do your chat partners shower you with lots of compliments and declarations of love right from the start? Then be extra vigilant, you don’t know each other!
➔ Sometimes, however, scammers take the opposite approach by making their messages look very serious. The scammers show interest and want to know everything about you in order to establish a personal connection with you: What you do in your free time, whether you have children, how you feel about former partners, whether you have friends, believe in God and the like.
➔ The scammers themselves usually have a very eventful life and have allegedly had to deal with many strokes of fate: they want to arouse sympathy.
The language:
Love scammers often write in good English on the internet. You should therefore check whether your new contact is not from your region but from abroad. This is where cases occur time and again.
Requests for money, joint accounts or sending parcels:
If you refuse to send money, fraudsters often use fake checks that you are supposed to cash or Bitcoin-Wallets. Also be careful if your new acquaintances ask you to send letters or parcels to third parties or to forward parcels to unknown people (money-laundry!).
Ask for a visa or invitation:
Scam women in particular often beg for invitations to your country. The criminals often pretend to want to open a joint account with you and ask for copies of identity documents. The data is used to forge passports.
How to protect yourself from romance scams
Ask yourself why a complete stranger, who is also exceptionally attractive, is interested in you. Why is she promising you great love even though you have never met?
Check out your flirt partners using search engines: search for pictures, names, telephone numbers or addresses. Enter the name in Google and add the word “scammer”. This often confirms the suspicion.
Use the Google reverse image search. You can quickly find out whether your flirt partners have used stolen profile pictures or photos from image databases.
Insist on a video chat. This way, you can at least make sure that the person actually exists. But be careful: a video chat is no proof of seriousness, as the criminals may not be afraid to talk to you via video.
The police advise you to use an alternative e-mail address for digital correspondence. This will prevent you from having to delete your main email account if you have to break off contact with the fraudster and they can no longer harass you.
Do not respond to the demands of love scammers. Never transfer money.
If possible, reverse payments made immediately.
Do not cash cheques or forward letters and parcels – do not keep them either.
Do not pass on any account details! This enables fraudsters to make direct debits or launder money through your account.
Talk to relatives or close friends about the situation and get advice if you are unsure.
What should I do if I have become a victim of romance fraud?
Break off all contact immediately, whether by e-mail or telephone. Do not reply to emails or phone calls. It is best to create a new e-mail address and telephone number. Back up all e-mails and chat histories on an external hard disk or USB stick as proof.
Keep bank transfer receipts.
Also warn your friends in social networks and the contacts in your email address book. Fraudsters often send a computer virus with their emails, which scans the data in your email address book or penetrates your computer.
File a criminal complaint with the police immediately. In many federal states, this can be done online in just a few minutes. It is difficult to prosecute such offenders because they are based abroad. Nevertheless, you should report the incident. This is important because banks may take action against you if you have unknowingly submitted counterfeit cheques.
Or because you could be accused of money laundering if you have channelled funds through your own account. By making a complaint, you can express your own concern and thus take the wind out of the sails of any proceedings.
